We were lucky to film at the newly relaunched and rechristened Eastington Park this past weekend. The venue has undergone some major refurbishment in the past month or so and is really looking wonderful. You could almost smell the fresh paint!

Au Naturel

Did you know that Adam Huckle Films only ever use natural light when they film? It's true. We don't use any additional lighting when we record weddings or civil partnerships - but why?

There is something really beautiful about the way natural light looks on film, all the elements such as the golden glow you get later on in the day as the sun begins to set or the flicker you get from a candle late at night - these things look beautiful as is, there's no need to mess with something which looks so great to begin with.

We're not haters of fabricated light, there is a time and place for it but we never use it when shooting weddings. We rely on the ambient lighting and the levels of light provided naturally by mother nature. The final result is footage which looks so real, there isn't anything false about it.

The natural light discussion comes in to its own as the sun begins to set. Once most natural light has disappeared and you're left with darkness - then what? We then rely on the ambient lighting provided by elements such as candles, soft lighting at a venue or lighting set up by a live band or DJ. Again we believe that this simply looks great so why fuss and bother with stark lighting which spoils all of this wonderful atmosphere.

It may sound a touch pretentious and trust us, thats not how we intend it to sound - but we are occasionally asked if we use any extra lighting. While we have with us, it's not something we are going to use at a wedding or civil partnership. We love what can be achieved with natural light.

Barefoot Books' World Atlas book launch!

On saturday we had the pleasure of filming Barefoot Books' "World Atlas" book launch in Oxford, we have produced work for Barefoot in the past however this was something quite exciting and new as it also involved filming an interview with Nick Crane - a geographer, writer and explorer popular for his presenting work on BBC Two's Coast.

The atlas itself is a really beautiful children's book and we were lucky to be asked to film the events taking place at the launch this past Saturday in Barefoots' Oxford store. The launch consisted of a presentation and discussion with Nick Crane, the author of the book, who brought along some of his trusty tools for adventuring including an Ice Axe, various hats for all weather conditions and a tin of sardines (just in case)! Following on from the presentation there was a book signing, a presentation of a beautiful cake (very tasty, I might add) and then to conclude we filmed an interview with Nick.

Filming events is now second nature to us, we are used to keeping in the background and capturing everything that takes place. We are confident about filming unobtrusively. I suppose our work with weddings has really helped streamline our process for filming. We know that a brief moment caught on film can change everything - so you have to be ready at a moments notice.

Filming at Barefoot Books' Summertown, Oxford store was a real treat. It's so vibrant and there are so many different things you can film. It's really colourful and all the various books and games look so great on film.

A new aspect of filming for us was the interview that followed on from the presentation. Obviously we have filmed interviews in the past but this was something a bit different as we were not asking the questions. Organisation is where I really shine, so with a bit of planning we were able to execute a great interview which felt intimate and will look wonderful on-screen.

We were even paid a compliment by Nick Crane upon completing filming: "I must say, you have done a great job, really professional." That kind of made my day.

Promo films for Bristol businesses

In the past year Adam Huckle Films has continued to grow and expand and as we come towards the end of our "mad summer rush" of filming we are looking to build some new relationships with other Bristol businesses and expand our portfolio even more. What we are offering is quite special - we want to produce short promotional films for other businesses in the Bristol area - for no charge whatsoever. Think of them similar to a TV advert - 2 or 3 minutes long showcasing what your business has to offer.

We really love filming. We're never happier then when we are being creative and doing something exciting and different. This applies not just to our award winning wedding and civil partnership films, but also to the corporate and business side of things.

Why are we doing this? We see it as a wonderful way to not only work with other businesses locally but also to expand and build on our corporate and business side of filming. Think of it like an exchange of favours - we will film a promotional video for your business in exchange for using the video on our website. Simple! There's no catches. Selecting the right videographer

When it comes to your wedding, picking the right supplier is key – no matter if it’s chair covers, bridesmaid dresses or a videographer. It’s important to pick the right supplier for you.

If you decide you would like a videographer this is only the first step in your selection process. There are so many videographers out there, all seemingly offering the same thing. The idea that all videographers produce the same work is incorrect – every company has their own distinct process from start to finish.

Think of it like this; You ask a selection of artists to create a painting based on the same photograph. You would find that each of these artists would interpret the work in their own individual way and create something unique based on their outlook. The same applies to videography, especially in the wedding / civil partnership industry.

When selecting the videographer for your big day keep in mind what you like visually. This is absolutely key. Picking a videographer based on what you like means that you are already sharing that creatives “vision” (for want of a better word, apologies if this sounds pretentious!). If you like what you see then this is usually a good indication that the end product will be something you absolutely adore. Emotion plays a big part in the decision making process – if you find something that clicks with you, then that’s a great sign.

Another key part of the decision making process should be the videographers method of filming. Again there is a lot of variation here – some will use a lot of staging, direction and interaction and others (like us) will opt for a discreet and natural filming style. We have always said that we film the day as it unfolds, observing and capturing everything that takes place without the need for fabrication. We personally believe that having everything shot discreetly results in real reactions, you’re not watching a performance, you’re watching a document of your day.

It goes without saying that viewing samples of work is very important. These should give you a good idea of how the work is put together and the quality of the product. You can view lots of samples on our website without any commitment, you’re free to watch as much or as little as you want. We also hear a lot of feedback from potential clients (some book, others don’t), it’s always great to hear your thoughts about our work.

Another aspect to consider is see what other people have said about a videographers work. We think client feedback is invaluable, we always share what our past bride and grooms have said about our work in full. Seeing what a real person has said about a product can mean ten times more than whatever we, as a business, have written on our own website. Did we mention that 100% of our past clientele have said they would recommend us?

Another important part of selecting the right videographer for your wedding or civil partnership is the connection you share with the supplier. You may like the look of someone’s work but when you speak with that person, you don’t “click”. You wouldn’t want a guest at your wedding who you didn’t get on particularly well with, so why put up with someone who you’re paying to be there! We always speak to our clients before booking, this can either be over e-mail, on the phone or in person. We want to make sure that you’re happy with your choice.

The list really is endless, but what it comes down to is “what do you want?”. We usually suggest making a list of priorities and then seeing if they match up with a potential supplier.

Finally, if you are unsure about any aspect of a videographers process then ask. We are always hearing from people, some of them are clients and others are just passing by. You shouldn’t be afraid to ask any questions, you’re potentially spending a lot of money on a service so it’s only right that you would want to ask things.

What makes a successful wedding film?

When selecting a videographer for your wedding or civil partnership it can be a real minefield. Once you have made your selection and found a videographer that works for you, the next step is making sure your wedding or civil partnership film is a success. Every videography company is different, but for AHF we think there are a few things that can really make the difference.

But what are they?

The key to having a wedding film that you will love is to forget you're even having the film made. We always tell our clients to ignore us (we promise we won't get our feelings hurt) and just go about their wedding as if we aren't there. By doing so, it creates a relaxed and informal atmosphere and no one feels on edge because "they're having a video done". We always do everything in our power to make sure people know they don't have to be afraid of us, we don't mind you walking by the cameras and we certainly don't care if you've brought along your own video camera. We're really relaxed and very friendly, we do our very best to blend in with the rest of your guests. It may seem counter-productive to pay for a videographer and then ignore them, but the final result is a great movie which shows you and your partner naturally interacting with all of your guests.

We don't set up or stage shots. We like to document the day naturally and without the need to fabricate footage. For us, this is key to a successful wedding or civil partnership film. If you're "acting" for the camera, it will show. We like to make sure everything we shoot is real.

Another factor which can really help your movie is song choices. It's not a case of picking "good music" because thats subjective. The important part is taking your time to pick music that really reflects you and your new spouse. Don't be afraid of selecting any song. If it reflects you well, then it will work with the movie. It's our job to make the visuals fit with the audio, and having music which goes hand-in-hand with your style will really help. We have an extensive music guide on our website which caters to all tastes.

Have fun. That's the most important thing you, as a client, can do. If you're relaxed and having a good time then it will show in the movie. Your big day will the the result of months (sometimes years) of planning and of course you want everything to be wonderful - but don't sweat the small stuff. Take it easy and really enjoy yourself - the day will fly by (it's a cliched saying, but it's true) so make the most of it. Smile lots and enjoy the time with your family and friends.

The final part of a successful wedding or civil partnership video is to have a good dialogue with your videographer. We always tell our clients that we're making a movie for them, so they can have it any way they want. If you see something in your film and you're not 100% happy, make sure to say something. It not hurtful or rude to voice your opinion, it's your film! We want to make sure everything is just right.

The rest of what makes a wedding DVD a success rests with us. It's our job to fit the jigsaw together. We will compile all of the footage we shoot and create something out of all the tiny moments from your day. We work really hard to make sure that the film reflects you and your day. It's really important to us that each movie is different - we don't ever want to make a wedding film/video/DVD/whatever-you-want-to-call-it that's just fitting in to our predetermined template. We love creating something different each time.

If you're unfamiliar, a marryoke video is basically a music video which is (usually) shot on your wedding day. It involves everyone miming along to a song chosen by the happy couple. "Bridesmaids"

One of the perks of working in the wedding industry is you sometimes (just sometimes) get the inside scoop on new trends and upcoming events relating to all things wedding. UPDATE: Well, it certainly isn't the film many people imagined. It's a really funny (and strictly for grown ups) comedy movie. I personally think a lot of people expected a standard run of the mill chick flick but I was pleasantly surprised by the real laugh out loud moments from this movie. I would suggest you gather up as many friends as possible and head to your cinema asap!

Marryoke In Progress

Last weekend we had the pleasure of filming a marryoke video for our clients Moira and Andy. They were self described as "two young at hearts" getting married and wanting to do something a bit different. They decided that a marryoke video was the way to go, and we're so glad they chose us to film it.

We were also really lucky to work with a fantastic photographer. Kate Hateley was there as the official photographer to capture all of the goings on - we worked really well together. Kate was kind enough to send us the following picture of Marcus filming a section of the marryoke.

We had such a great time filming the marryoke video, everybody was really up for it and willing to take part (which always makes our job just that little bit easier!). It was also good fun to work with Kate, and we thank her for sending us the above photo as a keepsake of the days events! Wanted: A Photographer

We are going to be filming a very unique days work on Sunday May 29th 2011. This is a very special opportunity and is really a one off.

We're looking for a photographer to join us on the days filming so that they can document the event for us. It wouldn't require any formal shots, just capturing plenty of stuff as the days events unfolded. We have been working on this project for quite a while and we would really love to have the day photographed informally.

We're looking for a photographer who would be happy to blend in the background and snap away, it's going to be a very fun day and we're looking for someone to be a part of it.

We are unfortunately unable to offer any pay for this event, likewise you would need to sort out your own travel arrangements however we would buy any food and drink on the day (we won't see you go hungry!). The event is taking place near Wrexham.

We don't require mounds of experience, just someone who is good at what they do and is willing to help us out and have some fun. When you work in the media field it’s quite common to be contacted by companies who want to use your footage for a project. We don’t normally allow our footage to be used for various reasons (client privacy being a main concern) however when we were contacted by Cactus TV we had a change of heart. Cactus TV produce a number of shows including Saturday Kitchen, The Hairy Bikers and The TV Bookclub – a personal favourite of mine – so we knew they were a big deal and it was something to strongly consider.

They were interested in using some of our work for a feature on the new Channel 4 chat show Fern hosted by, unsurprisingly, the lovely Fern Britton. The feature was going to be about marryoke videos (What is a marryoke?) and they wanted to use some of our work to showcase what a marryoke is. We were also asked if we had an upcoming marryoke that they could film us filming (does that make sense? It sounds a bit like Inception). We did have an upcoming marryoke to film within the timeframe however it was going to feature guests and not the bride and groom – not quite what was required.

We were asked to send off a DVD of our work that would be looked at by the shows producers. We merrily posted off a DVD and waited to hear back. It didn’t take long. Within a couple of days we had heard back that they were interested in using our work – if we wanted to go ahead with it. We considered the idea for about 12 seconds and then agreed.

After signing a release form the final step was to get the approval from the couple featured on the clip. I called up Christine (the bride) and left her a rather ramble-filled voicemail explaining that they could be on TV. Christine and James were such good sports and said they were happy to be featured, even taking the time to point out how much they liked Fern Britton (us too!).

We got the final go ahead and we were told the featured would be on Monday 28th March, the first show of the brand new series. We may have told a few people in the run up (Ok, so we shouted it from the roof tops), it was fair to say we were pleased our work was being used.

Come the day (yesterday) we were watching at 5pm and soon enough the feature was shown, including our work (result!). We should point out that we were not the company shown filming the marryoke, although we were asked. Everyone has a very different approach to filming, including marryokes, so it was really interesting to see how others produced their work.

We had a few messages via e-mail (“Nice one!” “I saw it! I saw it!” etc) and a couple of mentions on Twitter which was nice. We were really proud to showcase our work and it’s always nice to say “as featured on Channel 4”.

Although we produce marryoke videos, they are usually (but not exclusively) filmed alongside a standard film. We do offer a stand-alone service but most of the time we are filming a full wedding which just happens to include a marryoke video as a special extra feature. Adam Huckle Films to be featured on Channel 4's "Fern" Chat Show

This coming Monday (28th March) sees the launch of a brand new chat show on Channel 4 featuring the lovely Fern Britton. We are thrilled to announce that Adam Huckle Films will be featured in the opening episode! We don't want to say too much at the moment but our work is going to be appearing at some point in the show (we don't know when, and we don't know for how long for!). Once the episode has aired will be posting an additional blog to explain the exciting process.

Our work will be featured this coming Monday from 5pm on Channel 4. We'll be watching, we hope you will be too.

Well today has been rather an exciting day!

  We found out today that we are one of 99 suppliers chosen as a winner at the ZankYou International Wedding Awards. We can’t really think of the appropriate words to write which would convey how much this means to us, we are very honoured to have been selected to win this award. We won’t make an Oscar speech and blub too much, but we’d like to explain what this means to us.  

The win is very special to us for a number of reasons – ZankYou selected the winners themselves, there was no application process or campaigning, they simply selected the winners after what we can image was a rather gruelling process. Perhaps if there was a camera available during the speeches to get a shot of people's responses to the jokes / speeches in general. Really struggling to think of anything that needs improving! Genuinely can't think of anything!

Since we launched our new pricing structure for the 2011 year all of our plans now include an additional HD video camera to capture the guests reactions to the speeches. Every new client booking in 2011 will get this service included with their pricing plan. We filmed a wedding recently for our clients Helen and Simon, we even blogged a few of the photos we snapped from the day. They got married in Thornbury and had their reception at Thornbury Castle, which is a really beautiful venue. The sun was out and it was a really beautiful day, Helen was kind enough to send us her thoughts on the service we provided:

From my first initial correspondence with Adam, I had a great feeling I had picked the correct videographers to use. Your pricing is spot on, not lower or higher end and that is a big consideration as weddings cost so much money. Every e-mail we exchanged was pleasant and informative. Our meeting was good as it gave me a chance to meet you both in person and go through any ideas, thoughts etc. I loved the fact that you were both so into music also as a couple of friends videos had 2 songs and it was a very dull in comparison! I was blown away with how great you both were on the day, it wasn't awkward or invasive at all - in fact my guests loves chatting to Marcus! I didn't notice the cameras there, just so discreet, and yet you seemed to still capture everything that was required without me noticing. You both worked so hard on the day to get it right, arriving at the church and castle long before us or any of our guests and I loved the shots of the quietness of it all before we descended on it and caused mayhem! I did feel you went over and above the hours I thought you would have put in and it much such a difference for the film, to see the entire day fold right up until the early evening - it's a long day for you guys but it was really noticed.

The wait to get my film seemed a bit long but to be fair you do warm people at busy times it can take X-amount of weeks. When the proof arrived, I was totally, totally, blown away. It was absolutely perfect, magical and everything I had hoped for. From the flowers blowing in the wind outside the church to the blue sky and the light coming through the church windows - you had caught it all so artistically and beautifully. I loved the way you had picked my songs to go so well with the specific scenes and it was edited so, so well.

The extra bonus for me was some of the fantastic still photos you caught, they were amazing and as the photographer was long gone by that point, if you guys hasn't been there - i would never have got those beautiful pictures of the two of us and me with my daughter which we so stunning and will always be treasured.

I have to say to brides out there - if you can only afford a photographer or a videographer, I would go with the videographer every time as they capture every part of your special day in such intimate detail.

Thank you so much for our fantastic film, we love it and thought you guys were amazing!

Editing

When filming a wedding or civil partnership the actual day of filming is only one part of the process. The editing process can mean the difference between a good film and an exceptional film. We are always really careful when editing our weddings and civil partnerships to make sure that we put in the same level of service on all films - we want to highlight the fine details and showcase the little things that really make a day what it is - something special.

During what we call "The Summer Run" we can sometimes film up to four weddings over a single weekend period (Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday), this obviously results in a lot of projects which require editing together. We are always mindful of the fact our clients want to see their movies (and trust us, we're pleased when folks are itching to see it) however we are also very careful we don't rush through projects in order to have things complete just a touch quicker.

Usually, editing a movie takes up to one week to construct. This includes all the fancy little details such as colour correction, audio balancing and then the editing itself. Once the movie has been edited together we then post our a preview DVD of the film, so our clients can watch the cut of the movie and let us know their thoughts. Then when we have heard their feedback, if necessary we make any changes and then we produce the final movie with all the bells and whistles.

So in summary, we want to extend a big "thank you" to our clients for being patient while we work our way through our projects. The New Website!

We have been talking about it for quite a while now, but we are so excited to finally announce that our brand new website is up and running - right now!

Head over to www.adamhuckle.com now and take a look at our new design. We won't bore you with all of the new features but we will outline a few cool new additions below.

1) We now have 12 full HD trailers - The trailers of our work are available in standard definition or high definition, it's your choice! We previously had six trailers so we are very excited to roll out double the amount of footage available to watch online. Further to this, the trailers are all controlled and hosted by us, meaning we retain complete control over them at all times - we don't upload our wedding videography footage to YouTube or Vimeo, so the only place to see our work is on our website. By coming directly to our website it means we have no middle men involved - from us, to you!

2) Everything is future proofed - We have spent a lot of time making sure that all of the website is suitable for viewing in the future, all of our videos are available in HTML5 which is a relatively new video format expected to become the Internet standard soon - it will also work with your iPhone or iPad. The entire site has been designed to be a pleasurable viewing experience no matter if you are at home on your computer or if you're on the bus on the way to work!

3) We now have an online brochure - You now don't need to wait for the postman to arrive to read up on our work, we now have our promotional brochure available to view on our website instantly. The brochure can be downloaded and it's been optimised so that it's great quality but a very quick download - meaning you can read it while on the go - on your phone or iPad.

4) New Services - We have launched some brand new services with our new website, this includes new extra features including the very desirable "Bridal Couture". We have carefully listened to our clients and asks what they would like to see made available, and hey presto - here it is!

What is wedding cinematography?

We are often asked by our clients "what is wedding cinematography" or we're asked if there is a difference between a videographer and a cinematographer, the simple answer is - when it comes to weddings and civil partnerships, there isn't a difference between the two.

In the very broadest term cinematography is the act of making a film. So if you have a video camera and you are in the business of making movies, then you can classify yourself as a cinematographer if you so wished. A cinematographer is someone who operates a movie or video camera.

Within the wedding and civil partnership industry the term cinematographer/cinematography has taken on a meaning of higher quality video production. This can either be just a higher quality of service or footage or it can get more involved to mean the actual production level is higher to include things such as lighting rigs or camera dollies. For us, we say we are cinematographers because we want to offer the highest possible level of service and shoot some exceptional footage which is natural and not staged, without the need for extra bells and whistles. There isn't a distinct difference between someone who is a wedding and civil partnership videographer and someone who is a wedding and civil partnership cinematographer. When you get in to the realm of television or film production, the role of a cinematographer changes quite a lot - they are also sometimes known as the "Director of Photography" or "DP" for short. But let's not get in to that!

So when you are having a mooch online and see someone saying they are a wedding and civil partnership cinematographer, fear not, they are offering the same thing as the more commonly heard of videographer - to film your day with a movie or video camera.

When it comes to AHF, we don't mind saying we are cinematographers (in fact, we quite like it, because it makes us feel fancy!) but we always assure our clients that just because we use that term to describe ourselves it doesn't mean that we will show up on the day with an entourage or a series of camera rigs and boom mics - heaven forbid! We always shoot the day in a natural and discreet way, we just use the term "cinematography" because, honestly, it sounds a bit cool!

We had a wonderful day filming a wedding yesterday, while many folks were enjoying the late August sunshine and making the most of their bank holiday weekend, we had the pleasure of filming the wedding of Helen & Simon. They had their service in Thornbury and their reception in the beautiful surroundings of Thornbury Castle. We had some alone time with them in the early evening as the sun was setting and here are a few of the candid shots we managed to photograph.

Marryoke Filming

Rock The Dress!

We will soon be taking part in a really cool and exciting days filming which involves a "Rock the Dress" shoot. Our good friends at David Gow Photography are going to be doing a shoot in the centre of Bristol and we will also be there filming what takes place.

Rock the Dress is basically another chance for a bride to put on her wedding dress and take some more creative and exciting photographs. It's not to be confused with "Trash the Dress" which involves, unsurprisingly, trashing the wedding dress. Rock the Dress shows off the dress and features some great opportunities for photographs which may have not been possible on the actual wedding day. It's a lot of fun and results in some really creative and breathtaking footage.

Irish Parliament approves Civil Partnerships

Politicians in Ireland have passed a law which will grant gay and lesbian couple the right to form civil partnerships. The bill passed yesterday and was welcome news for campaigners. It's expected to become law this autumn. This is very exciting news for couples in Ireland who wish to show their commitment to one another. You can read more about this news story here.

"The Grandmother Edition"

The Godfather did it, so did Superman , George Lucas is infamous for doing it with Star Wars and recently quite a few videography clients have caught on to the trend too. What am I talking about? Re-edits.

A lot of what is seen and heard in a wedding or civil partnership DVD is 100% family friendly and suitable for everyone to see. There may be the odd occasion (and without pointing fingers, we're looking at you, Best Man) where during the speeches a more risque joke gets made. Most of the guests find it very witty and clever but maybe it's not something you want grandparents or elderly relatives to hear on their copy of the final movie. This is where the re-edit comes in.

We have found that recently a few clients have requested a slightly cut version of their wedding / civil partnership movie. This re-edited version of the film has all the same content but has a few tweaks during the speeches to remove the slightly more blue humour. Now, we're not talking about the worlds most offensive jokes here; it should be noted that the content that gets removed from "The Grandmother Edition" is mostly suitable for everyone - but perhaps sometimes it's things you'd rather the more senior members of your family don't hear!

Re-edits can be done on the film with relative ease, as long as the re-edit isn't more than one hours editing time we will charge no extra for this service. Most films will not need any such re-edits but we think it's always nice to provide reassurance that if things do get a little bit blue, we can always provide a special cut of the movie! Problem solved.

Our good friends at Decadent Weddings Fayres will be hosting at Cotswold 88 Hotel on Sunday.

Cotswold 88 is a beautiful and contemporary hotel located, unsurprisingly, in the heart of the Cotswolds. It's an incredibly unique hotel and is a most sought after wedding venue. Decadent Weddings will be the days organisers for the wedding fayre, you can expect a very high level of service and quality from them.

Over the Easter weekend in April we filmed a wedding for our clients Joan and Dragisa. Their wedding took place at The Park in Wick, in between Bristol and Bath. It was a really lovely day, the sun was shining and everyone had a great time. We recently completed their movie and they have been kind enough to send us their thoughts on our service:

Your prices are competitive compared with the other DVD companies we looked at. The reason why I chose you was because of your DVD demo was was, in my opinion, very professionally shot giving good coverage of the wedding and most importantly it wasn't cheesy (which I felt others were).

On the day, you both appeared extremely organised and very clear about what you wanted in order to include important and relevant parts of the wedding in the DVD. I felt confident that you were doing what you were meant to be doing and as a result of this our wedding DVD is FANTASTIC. We really love it - thank you ever so much.

My only comment, which I already e-mailed you about was concerning our ring bearer, which was a bit of a shame but at such a big wedding with so many things going on (which you captured) I cannot complain and am so glad everybody else was included. It's brilliant - thank you again for doing such a great job. I will definitely recommend you to my friends and if I could get married to Drag for a second time we would have you to back to film us again! - Joan.

We really appreciated Joan & Drag taking the time to get in touch regarding their movie. The part mentioning the "ring bearer" was most unfortunate as we were unable to move at all during the ceremony and a casualty of this meant we were unable to film the ring bearer giving the rings over. As a token of apology for this we have sent Joan & Drag an extra copy of their full movie to say sorry.

We are always so grateful when couples take the time to let us know what they thought of our service.

A surprising thing has happened, we have already taken some bookings for 2012. While this is not uncommon for one or two people we are finding that 2011 and 2012 are already filling up. This doesn't however mean that it's not worth getting in touch to check your date!

We still have some dates available throughout 2010, so if you are thinking it's too late to get a videographer booked then you may be in luck. Our availabilty is very limited for 2010 but a few dates are still free (yes, we admit it, we're gluttons for work-related punishment!). What goes into editing a film

We have been asked a few times recently by some upcoming clients about what exactly goes into editing a movie. Some believe it's a case of show up on the big day, film some footage and then whack it on to DVD or blu-ray. This would be a simple process and very easy, but it's not what we do. Here's a break down of what we do for every wedding and civil partnership film we undertake.

1. The footage is all shot on Mini-DV tape, which may sound old fashioned, but with the broadcast quality video equipment we use it means that the footage quality is unbeatable. The tapes are carefully stored and when it's time to upload them each tape is uploaded in real time - this means if the tape is 56 minutes long, it'll take 56 minutes to upload. The footage isn't ever compressed or compromised at all. Marcus has the lovely job of maintaining and uploading all footage to our editing suite and network of computers!

2. Once all of the footage has been uploaded to our system, it is saved on an external drive to make sure it is all safe and sound. It is then added to a brand new "Final Cut" (the software we use) project and each individual tape is catergorised into its own folder, so we can easily manage who shot what and keep everything neat and tidy!

3. The footage is then scanned through by Adam and Marcus together, we check out every single shot that was filmed and make notes. We are checking for anything that may not be useable (such as "dog doing his business in the background" and so on!) Once this process is completed we begin editing the movie.

4. Each movie has it's own customised editing process. To begin with this includes selecting an approproiate font and colour scheme for the films opening credits. The next step is to place everything where it should be, but this is far from the end result. All footage is then colour corrected (meaning we make sure all the colours look "just so" and aren't dulled or over exposed) and has it's audio balanced so that everything sounds right and there aren't any audio or visual discrepancies. The final footage is then edited together to produce the final cut of the movie.

5. Once a final cut is ready to be produced, it is fully rendered and finalised. It's now ready to export on to DVD for a preview film. The film is exported in full high definition and we watch a preview of the film in full HD on our editing suite. When it's all been checked it is created on DVD. This includes selecting and creating an appropriate DVD menu and adding images and text specific to our couples day. We then post this DVD to our clients, for them to watch.

6. Once we hear back from the clients regarding the film we make any requested changes to the movie (most of the time our clients like everything as it is, but sometimes there may be a few slight tweaks!). Once these changes have been made the film is once again re-rendered (in case of any changes) and is checked one final time by a very meticulous Adam and Marcus. Once everything has been approved, it's ready to be finally produced on either DVD or Blu-ray.

So there you go, in a nutshell that is our process. There are, of course, other parts to the process but those are strictly classified and highly top secret!

Civil Partnerships Now Allowed In Churches

Big news for gay couples yesterday as The House of Lords approved amendment to the Equality Bill. The amendment will give gay couples who wish to form a civil partnership the right to have their ceremony in a church. It will give churches the option of hosting a civil partnership but will not be compulsory.

We are currently updating all of the promotional media for 2010 - this includes the trailers on our website and the sample DVD's which are sent out to possible clients. We've started work on the new material so we are now going to freeze (how apt, in this weather!) sending out any media packs until the new discs are ready - this should only be at most one week.

Our Style

We are often asked by possible clients "what's your style" and it's a really good question - there are many types of videographer out there and although we all do the same job, the way in which we all do it is very different.

We like to tell people that we're a documentary style videography company - this means we film weddings and civil partnerships in a very discreet and subtle way. It also means there is very little (if any) "staging" - which is when you are posing for the camera is a set up shot. We try to keep staging to an absolute minimum, there may be some times when there is a shot that is too good to miss, but we try to avoid doing this as much as possible. We always tell our couples to just enjoy their day and not to worry about the video guys!

Because we dont set up shots, our films are a lot more natural looking but this doesn't mean we don't still get some really beautiful shots - we just want to work around you and not have to bother you with the sometimes time consuming requests! We will get really stunning footage without the need for faking anything. Take a look at our trailers online for an example of our work. We will be adding some new example of work in the next few weeks so keep your eyes peeled!

VAT & our prices

Everybody has read about the increase of VAT on January 1st - meaning the rate of 15% has now gone back up to 17.5%. Our prices are not affected by this change. All of our pricing remains exactly the same and will not be going up due to the change in VAT. We've had a few queries, so we thought it was best to answer on the blog for everyone's peace of mind!

Christmas Cards

Every year we usually send our clients from the past year a Christmas card, however last year we decided to slightly change the process and make a donation to charity instead. We will once again be doing this in lieu of actual cards. We thank all of our clients who have taken the time to send a card to us, and we hope that you would all agree that a charitable donation would be a suitable substitute.

This year we have donated £50 to the Terrance Higgins Trust, a leading UK charity which provides support for those with HIV and AIDS. You can find out more about the charity by visiting their website. You can also find information on their site about how to make your own donation.

We hope that everyone has a really wonderful Christmas and enjoys the holiday season!

The Marryoke

We've mentioned it in the past and it's been on our website for some time now, but the marryoke has finally been added to our "demo" section of the website. After a string of requests from perspective clients we have moved the video so it is now with all the other trailers on the site. It's a bit of fun and totally different to all our other online samples. What's a marryoke? Well, its basically a music video filmed on your big day. It requires a lot of work but the end result is a lot of fun, you can see it for yourselves here.

Postal Strikes

Our postal services are largely unaffected by the Royal Mail postal strikes. Some parcels are taking 2 or 3 days longer to arrive than normal but on the whole everything thus far has been fine. All client mail is being sent "signed for" as a precaution during the delays. Hopefully things will be back to normal soon and as they say, normal service can resume!

4 Years...

It's been 4 years to the day that we filmed our very first wedding. Our client's were Catherine and James and we were as nervous about filming the day as they were about saying their vows! We have since come a really long way from that very first gig, but our ethos has remained very much the same - keep it simple, discreet and do a good job!

Below are some of the comments we received from Catherine and James in regards to their film:

They blended in with the guests and as a result captured the day as it naturally progressed - no strained aching/posed smiles in sight! We got back from our honeymoon, and the DVD was on the door mat waiting for us. It had been edited seamlessly.

Nothing was overlooked, and it was amazing to watch our day again, and catch up on the bits I remember, and some that I don't (the day went so quickly!). I cannot recommend this company highly enough - nothing was overlooked, and they have created a very special and personal reminder of the best day of my life. Use these guys - you won't regret it!

So here's to Catherine and James - we have gone from strength to strength and we will continue to work very hard to ensure that we remain "Bristol's best videographers"! Now then, who wants a slice of cake?!

Debenhams Wedding Fair - This Sunday!

We're very pleased to announce that we will be attending the Debenhams Wedding Fair on Sunday 27th September (this coming Sunday!) in Gloucester. The event is going to be fantastic, with over 40 exhibitors meaning you will get to see a great selection of services! It's running from 10am until 3.30pm and there is free parking and entry. There are also fashion shows at 11.30am and 1.30pm.

Joint Videography & Photography Package

It's not even launched yet, however there has been unprecedented demand for our soon to be released joint videography and photography package. We had had enquiries for dates as far off as 2012 asking if we are available, we really couldn't be more pleased.

Our package will incorporate the best of two professional wedding and civil partnership services. We have joined forced with the fantastic team over at Blenheim Photography (visit their website here) to create a joint package which provided professional videography and photography - something which people have been incredibly interested in.

Our style of filming a wedding is very relaxed and natural, we don't set stuff up and we like things to flow naturally - you can spot a "staged" film a mile off! We are very careful to be as discreet and unobtrusive as possible when filming. This is a great reason why our work with Blenheim Photography gels so well, they are a very relaxed and friendly team (just like us) who like us, want you to enjoy your day and make the most of it!

We will make an official announcement about the joint package very shortly, so check back soon for all of the juicy details!

We recently filmed at the beautiful Greenway Hotel in Cheltenham for our clients Inara and Martin. They we're a rather last minute booking as Martin was not at all convinced about having professional videographers recording their day, but with some persuasion from his wife-to-be we were selected as their videography company of choice! This past weekend we had the pleasure of being the wedding videographers at Puckrup Hall in Tewkesbury, which is part of the Hilton hotel group.
