We've written about this subject on this blog before and I am sure we will write about it again - music. Picking songs for your wedding or civil partnership video seems to be a universal problem, so if you feel it's just you thats not able to pick some suitable music, dont panic, you're not alone. We get asked this question more than any other - "what music should I use for my video?".
Our advice is broken down in to two simple parts. Part one is to try and select songs that aren't
too current, as it could age your wedding film prematurely. A good rule to follow is that if the song is more than 2 years old and you still really like it, you should be fine. That's not to say that picking current music is forbidden, there is a lot of great music always coming out, so it's totally down to your personal preference. As a general rule, the 2 year rule works well.
The second part of our advice is to try and not worry too much (useful advice, right?!). Just pick music that you and your partner both like - regardless of if it's rock, classical music or jazz - we've yet to encounter and music in a wedding or civil partnership film that hasn't worked. If you really like a song but you're worried about the meaning or connotation of the song, really dont panic, if you like how the music sounds then that will help make your film very special.
Another bit of useful advice is to use a service like iTunes, if you know you like a song then try searching for it's name and you may be suprised by the artists who have covered the song. For example Etta James' "At Last" has been covered by a number of different artists including Eva Cassidy, Beyonce, Stevie Wonder (check out this version!), Joni Mitchell, Nat King Cole and Celine Dion - quite a mixed bunch!
Don't forget that to comply with UK copyright law you will need to purchase a Wedding Video Recording Licence (WVRL) for both weddings and civil partnerships. The licence should cost you no more than approx £30 and will cover you for all music played / performed on the big day and also for any music added in post-production. You can buy a licence online
here.
Finally, don't forget to visit our
wedding music guide page on our website. It's a long list of popular songs that would suit any wedding or civil partnership video. If you think any songs should be added to the list then please get in touch. You can e-mail us at
info@adamhuckle.com with any suggestions or comments. We are based in Bristol but we video weddings and civil partnership films all over the UK including London, Birmingham, Manchester and Brighton.
